What Should Be Included in a Heavy-Duty Truck Preventive Maintenance Inspection?
Every truck and fleet is different. Maintenance intervals should consider manufacturer recommendations, mileage, engine hours, operating conditions, application, and previous repair history.
However, there are several areas that should routinely be evaluated.
1. Engine Oil and Lubrication
Engine oil is one of the most important components protecting a diesel engine.
During preventive maintenance, check:
- Engine oil level and condition
- Oil change interval
- Oil filter
- Visible engine oil leaks
- Oil around seals, gaskets, and fittings
- Unusual oil consumption
- Manufacturer-recommended lubrication points
Repeatedly adding oil between services shouldn't automatically be considered normal. Significant changes in oil consumption or new leaks deserve further investigation.
2. Fuel System and Filters
Fuel contamination and restricted filters can create performance and reliability problems.
Inspect or service:

3. Cooling System

- Hose clamps and connections
- Water pump area
- Surge/expansion tank
- Radiator cap and seals
- Visible coolant leaks
- Signs of dried coolant residue
- Fan and fan-drive components
A small coolant leak discovered during an inspection is much easier to manage than an overheating truck on the side of the highway.
4. Belts and Hoses
Belts and hoses often provide warning signs before they fail.
Look for:
- Cracking
- Fraying
- Glazing
- Excessive wear
- Loose or damaged tensioners
- Soft, swollen, or damaged hoses
- Leaking fittings
- Contact or rubbing against surrounding components
Replacing a worn belt during scheduled maintenance is usually far less disruptive than replacing one after it fails during a route.
5. Air Intake and Filtration
Diesel engines need clean, unrestricted airflow.
Inspect:
- Engine air filter
- Air filter restriction indicator
- Intake piping
- Clamps and connections
- Charge-air cooler piping
- Boots and couplers
- Signs of dirt or contamination
Damaged intake components can affect performance and may allow contaminants into areas where they don't belong.
6. Brakes and Air System
The braking system deserves careful attention during every fleet maintenance program.
Check:
- Brake linings or pads
- Brake drums or rotors
- Brake chambers
- Slack adjusters
- Air lines and fittings
- Air tanks
- Air leaks
- Air compressor operation
- ABS warning indicators
- Brake hoses
- Visible damage or abnormal wear

7. Steering and Suspension
Heavy-duty trucks operate under significant loads, making steering and suspension inspections an important part of preventive maintenance.
Inspect components such as:
- Tie rods
- Drag links
- Kingpins
- Steering linkage
- Steering gear
- Power steering components
- Leaf springs
- Spring hangers
- Shackles
- Torque rods
- Air springs
- Shocks
- Bushings
- U-bolts
Watch for looseness, unusual movement, leaks, damaged components, and uneven wear.
8. Tires and Wheels
Tires can tell you a lot about the condition of a truck.
Check:
- Tire pressure
- Tread depth
- Uneven tire wear
- Cuts, bulges, or damage
- Matching tire sizes
- Wheel condition

- Valve stems
- Hub and wheel-end leaks

- Hub oil level where applicable
- Evidence of lubricant leaks
